Here we go again...

I spent a long time without writing and also a long time without running. I took advantage of my trip to Brasilia to run in different places. Unfortunately, the air in that city was too dry and it was so hot that I could barely run for 10 minutes! I went back to the hotel and decided to face the treadmill. Needless to say, the next morning I remembered how much it aches to go back running: two days in pain.

On the other hand, I must say that running does make me feel good! I remember how I felt my body change. It seems I got taller by running. Even my mood changes too... I guess the keyword here is : disposition!

Well, I went back to running and I feel more disposed to write too!

Much or little?

Today, I walked in Vila Madalena. I still feel some pain, but I can’t stop. Besides, I can enjoy the opportunity of seeing the streets, the people, the stores, the squares and the pace of the city.

While passing by an avenue, I saw an elderly man training in a small square placed between two streets, where there was less moviment.

That man seemed to be in his sixties. He was tall, thin and bald. He was jogging, slowly, taking short steps, from side to side. Sometimes, he was out of sight, probably because he went back there before returning and restarting all over again. No rush, under a nice shadow.

When I saw him, I thought: This guy is crazy! He keeps running in circles in such a small area... If he’s on the streets, why doesn’t he use the sidewalk and enjoy freedom?

When I realized I was having such foolish thoughts, I swore at myself and corrected my ideas. Who knows what his limits are or what he feels like doing? Who knows if he’s not having fun that way? Actually, it’s kind of cool to leave the world behind and simply spend sometime in a cozy place, walking slowly or running.

It’s great when you realize that running, walking or simply spending some time alone has no place, time, rules or patterns. You just have to feel like it and do it.

Pain

Eternal sport’s mate. You spend a few days in idleness and when you decide to move, pain shows up at once. I guess I overdid it last weekend.

My legs still hurt too much. I need resting... so, there’s nothing better than a good night’s sleep and stretching. Specially because there’s been a change in the weather. It’s been very cold, way different from the weekend. In São Paulo, there are no gray areas... it’s either too hot or too cold.

I’ve been thinking of Friday. I’m going to play soccer against the employees of a another company. If they happen to hate their client, (in this case, me!), I might get beaten up... so, once again: pain!

Running in the beach

Running in the Itaúnas Beach, Espírito Santo, Brazil. 12/31/2006

Coming back...

My weekend was too busy.

Saturday was “No Car Day”, so I thought it was an ideal opportunity to run in Vila Madalena. It was a real scorcher! It’s even worth a poll:

Which is worse: running in hot or cold weather?

The perfect match would be something in between, but each one has its “pros” in adverse situations.

Back to my weekend: There was a “Virada Esportiva”, a 24-hour event that encourages people to practice sports all over the city. So, I decided to stop by Latin America Memorial to play soccer.
On Sunday, another very hot day, I went to Horto to run and watched soccer games on TV.
We won the classic match: Palmeiras 1 X 0 Corinthians.
I feel very sore today, but I’ll talk about it on my next post.

Start, stop and go

Since I was a kid, sports have been in my life.

I remember the games on the street, very improvised ones, but I used to put in much energy and sweat.
During adolescence, I used to play soccer (indoor, especially) every time I had some free time.

Later, in university, I participated in the indoor soccer team. I was close to pursuing it as a career, but I ended up choosing advertising.

In São Paulo, the pace of life is too fast and since collective sports demand tons of free time (or more people with free time), I opted to run.

Nowadays, I’ve been training for 3-mile races and in December, I’ll run my first São Silvestre.
